Key Themes aND iDEAS in the Movie
Prejudice - when a person judges another person for being in a particular group.
The film takes place in a time where many forms of prejudice, especially racial discrimination (racism). In this case, the Aboriginal girls portrayed in the film are discriminated for being black by the white Australians. Luckily for the girls, they are seen as talented to Dave, the soldiers in Vietnam and other people outside Australia.
Aside from the themes of racism, other key themes and ideas in the movie include:

Aside from the themes of racism, other key themes and ideas in the movie include:
- Discrimination of age and marital status: Julie wasn't allowed to go with Gail and Cynthia because she is too young and she is carrying a baby. Despite this, Julie is determined to become a star.
- War: The film takes place during a war (presumably the Vietnam War). War can often ruin the lives of people who aren't involved, in this case, the girls getting attacked near their last Vietnam performance in the film and presumably losing Dave.
- Everything about being Aboriginal wasn't bad: You could see throughout the film, the girls show that that being an Aboriginal was a characteristic to be proud of.
